A theme for the 2004 was discussed. After some discussion, the committee agreed upon "Meeting at Kaw Point: A Convergence of Waters and Cultures."Preliminary Agenda
The committee talked about a preliminary agenda. Although Corps of Discovery II will have some activity of their own, Shari explained that we will have to fill in some blank time. The event is scheduled for June 25-June 27, 2004. Corps of Discovery II, Discovery Expedition of St. Charles and various speakers will be part of the program. Loren Taylor and Trish Schurkamp will work on putting together a "Watch Party" for the Discovery Expedition on opening day. Loren has contacts for a possible brass cannon (Wayne Henry).
Dedication of a monument was discussed. A design for the monument was also discussed. Helen Marie Fotovich volunteered to contact Sumner Academy arts department to see if they would be willing to make some preliminary drawings of a possible monument for the committee to look at.
Possible opening ceremony speakers were discussed, along with a reception after the evening opening event.
Kit Bardwell, Accessible Arts, talked about the mural that is planned for the wall at Kaw Point. The title will be "Flight of the Parakeets."
Other possible activities for the event discussed were: a children's play, Clark, York Symposium, period music, Chez Les Cannes, John Baptiste re-enactor, Hal Sterns, Mary Gunderson, and panel discussions.
Shari stated that the Kaw Indians from Ponca City, OK were interested in our event and helping with the Lewis and Clark Taskforce committee(s).
At our next meeting, we will continue the discussion on the monument, with hopefully some renditions, as well as a better understanding of some of the people that we need to invite to Opening Day and the reception and a preliminary budget.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 2, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. at the Wyandotte County Museum.
The meeting was closed at 7 p.m.
