Saturday October 1, 2005

Our new Lewis and Clark Historical Park at Kaw Point Needs Help

EVENT: 10:00-3:00pm, Oct 1, 2005 SATURDAY at Kaw point is your chance to help tune-up this beautiful park in preparation for the water festival event on Oct 8. The park was rebuilt largely with your help and now we as the New Friends of the Lewis and Clark Park at Kaw Point are helping to fine tune it. This 10 acre site needs your help to keep it looking good.

PURPOSE: This is a brush, weed and limb, path and grounds clean up event. The City will provide a truck to haul limbs and debris. Gary and Nancy Morris will be there to help with assignments and coordinate the effort.

Lunch and drinks will be provided at the camp fire area from Noon-1:00.

WHAT YOU WILL DO: You and other volunteers will work on one or more of these following task areas.

1. Pathways.. Trim the wooded areas, vines and overgrowth along pathways.

2. Cut and remove tree limbs, brush, saplings, and other debris that obstructs the view of the river along the Kaw River side viewing areas.

3. Rake camp ground and other open areas and bag or burn debris.

4. Smooth out and fill eroded areas on the pathways

5. Straighten & replace rocks lining the paths

6. Clean up the redoubt and treat the upright posts with preservative

7. Dig out and transplant 24-30 wild grape vine plants that have taken over the banks and paths. Re-plant along base of redoubt.

8. Pick up trash and bag and load in truck.

9. Remove driftwood from concrete dock stairway.

10. Move precut logs from camp site wooded area and stack wood closer to fire pit

11. Place wood chips in camp site enclosure and spread throughout

Things we need that you might be able to bring include gloves, trash bags, drinking water, loppers, pruners and leaf rakes, hard rakes, chain saws, axes, shovels, spades. We have some trash bags available but please bring some if you have a few extra. We also need a “Bob-Cat” if you know of anyone that can loan one for the day. We also need about 10 yards of wood chips (or a truck load), so if you know of a tree company that is wanting to get rid of their “chippings” please direct them down to Kaw Point or call Gary at 913-495-5525.

Directions to Kaw Point: Follow I-70 from the Kansas side into the downtown area of KCK and take the James Street exit and follow the signs to Fairfax Ave. Come to 1st and Fairfax Ave & turn at the Lewis and Clark sign and drive East thru the parking lot to the concrete flood wall, turn right and follow the blacktop thru the flood wall opening into the parking lot.

Check in with Nancy and Gary Morrison when you arrive. Without your volunteer help this would not be possible!!! See you Saturday OCTOBER 1ST AT KAW POINT.
