Kaw Point -
Lewis and Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point
Kaw Point Commemorative Event, June 25 - July 4, 2004
The event took place at Lewis and Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point,
and the opening ceremony recognized Native American culture and contributions. The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, a group of reenactors of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, encamped at the park and the public
was able to view their boats and encampment. Corps of Discovery II, the National Park Service’s traveling education exhibit,
was also located at the site, and the public was invited to view the exhibits and take in the performances under the Tent of Many Voices.
Kaw Point
is located at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers in Kansas
City, Kansas. Highlights of the six-acre park include an open-air
education pavilion with interpretive signs about the expedition as well
as an interactive computer element. Trails will run along the river and through
the woods, enabling a visitor to experience both ecosystems. A new boat
ramp and docking area will allow river access and include accessibility
for the physically challenged. Renovated restrooms, a boardwalk, a plaza
area for small concerts and other performances, and landscaping will round out
the park's first phase.
