High Line Park in Manhattan

The name of this park, located in the most famous neighborhood of New York – Manhattan – translates as “high line”. This name fully corresponds to the main feature of the park – unlike other public gardens, it is not on the ground, but at a height of ten meters from the surface.

Previously there was a branch of the elevated railroad, which in 1980 it was decided to close. The authorities decided what to do with the vacated area for a long time. Initially, it was planned to remove the trestle and rails completely, but then won the defenders of nature, who said that in a large city there is always a lack of greenery. Thanks to this, a charming and very unusual park appeared right on the railroad.

The construction of the High Line began in 2006 and was carried out in several stages. So this park can be called one of the newest attractions of Manhattan. Now the High Line reaches a length of 1.6 kilometers, but in the future may be extended to 34th Street.

Landscape designers, who were involved in the development of the High Line, decided to leave the rails as a reminder of the past of this corner of the city. In addition, the fauna and flora that developed here in the twenty years between the closing of the railroad and the beginning of the park’s development were preserved.

Now the High Line Park is rightfully called the longest roof in the world, turned into a green garden in the center of the metropolis. When developing the park, modern roof greening technologies were used, in particular, rainwater storage and outflow systems.

High Line Park is a favorite destination for locals who love to stroll along its planked sidewalks, relax on comfortable wooden lounge chairs, and admire the views of Manhattan. About 4 million people visit this unusual park every year.
